Every Tuesday from 4:30 to 6:30, starting March 11th at the 123 Community Space in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn.
This free youth-led program will provide a safe space for teens [ages 14-19] to analyze messages we receive from the media, and then to create our own media with the goal of visual agitation and thought provocation. We will use printmaking [screenprinting, stenciling, and linoleum block printing] to explore issues that matter to us, such as policing in schools, gangs, graffiti, youth empowerment, and role models in our communities. Participants will complete at least three finished prints, and will have the opportunity to show their work in an exhibit and celebration at the end of the program. Art supplies and snacks will be provided for each session.
Misled Youth was invited to the 4th Annual Positive Youth Fest in DC on December 29th and 30th. Four of us went to participate in a panel discussion entitled, “Youth Resistance, Youth Liberation”. This is the description:
Join members of the Baltimore Algebra Project from Baltimore MD, Misled Youth Network from New York City, and the Students for a Democratic Society chapter from Lancaster, PA in a panel/interview/discussion about stepping up and stepping it up as young people who want to see social change in the world. We’re gonna talk about anger, hope, inspiration, organization, identity and getting shit done. Expect participation. Expect to learn from amazing youth organizers in action.
The panel went really well. We also silkscreened on people’s clothes, sold patches and t-shirts, met some great people, checked out some cool local bands, ate an insane amount of free burritos, and had lots of fun! Misled Youth is looking forward to our next opportunity to hit the road!

This past week, Misled Youth had the exciting opportunity to introduce a group of dedicated Queens high school students to several printmaking techniques, and to support them in designing and screenprinting their own original artwork. This collaboration was part of Rensizzle week, a special week long program at The Renaissance School where the students broke down into 23 different clusters where they could each focus on exploring a topic of their choice. Two members of Misled Youth visited the students (and their awesome teacher, Nicholas) in the classroom early in the week for a full-day workshop preparing the students to design and print their artwork. Several days later, the student visited us at the 123 Printshop to make their designs a reality! Everyone learned and had fun, and we’re looking forward to doing more projects with The Renaissance School in the future!
More PIY pics coming soon! Also, check out this great PIY wiki the students are creating.

Come to the 123 Printshop and learn to print your own original posters, t-shirts, and more! Volunteers will help you out with the entire process. Bring black and white artwork on plain white paper or a transparency, and a screen if you have one. We have a small collection of screens -- you can purchase one from us for $5 to $15, depending on the size and whether or not you want to keep the screen for later use. The fee for exposing your artwork on the screen is $3-$5. We also provide affordable screenprinting services, but really encourage doing it yourself. it's a skill you can use forever.
We plan to add more weekly open hours in the near future, and will be holding free screenprinting classes in the upcoming weeks. All ages and skill levels are welcome!

As many of you have heard, Misled Youth is moving into a storefront space in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn along with A New World In Our Hearts and the Freegan Bike Workshop. The tentative name of this center is 123, from our street address. We are planning to organize community art projects, hands-on classes and workshops, and lots of exciting events at 123. Currently we are setting up an art studio and screen printing shop where people can create posters and t-shirts. We have permission to paint a 30 x 50 foot mural on the side of our building facing Myrtle Avenue, and are looking for the paint, scaffolding, and people to help make that happen.
People have already offered to bring poetry, literacy, music, dance, and visual arts activities into the space. We are looking for individuals and groups who are interested in bringing activities on these topics and others such photography, language, health, cooking (we have a small kitchen), history, current events, media, and more. We are spending August preparing 123 to be used, and plan to start these public activities in early September, coinciding with the beginning of the school year. Whether you can bring a two hour workshop or a six week series, we are inviting you to share your skills, knowledge, and curiosity at 123 Tompkins starting this fall. We are looking for hands-on workshops, discussions, study groups, and collaborative projects that are inspiring, participatory, and that value the knowledge and ability of everyone involved. We are also interested in booking performances, readings, film screenings, and art exhibits at 123. Please get in touch if you or someone you know would be interested bringing any of these things to the space at some point in the future. We will be creating a calendar of events and activities happening in the space starting in September.
Thanks for your support!

As many of you have heard, Misled Youth is moving into a storefront space in Bed-Stuy Brooklyn along with A New World In Our Hearts and the Freegan Bike Workshop. Our plan is to set up an art studio and screenprinting shop to create posters and t-shirts, as well as organizing community art projects and classes such as painting a 30x50 foot mural on the outer wall of our building and much more. This is an exciting opportunity for us to strengthen our creative and educational projects and engage with youth from the neighborhood and all over the city. And you can help! We’re in need of all kinds of materials including lumber, hardware, art supplies, office supplies, books, furniture, tools, and more. Please see our complete wish list for more info. Financial donations are also a big help – please make a donation if you can. Also contact us if you are interested in volunteering either to help set up in the short term or working with us on community arts and education projects in the somewhat more long term.
Thanks for all the support!
